Craftsman Profiles

These pages are intended to form a resource to link those who commission Interior Design and Liturgical and Devotional itemsa and artwork with craftspeople of high quality. Eventually it is hoped to form a Design network covering all the Liturgical crafts, which priests and architects can access when re-ordering and equipping churches. This page gives profiles of some of the craftspeople in the UK and Eire featured in our Church Crafts Gallery.

Helen designs the full scale model
for stained glass windows

Helen Maclean: Eire

Mosaic, Stained Glass, Site Specific Craft & Design for Churches.

Helen trained in mosaic and stained glass at Glasgow School of Art, and has developed into an experienced and skilled mastercraftsman, regularly collaborating with committees, architects and other artists in designing site specific environments and liturgical artwork. She has recently collaborated with studios in Italy and Germany.

She was Master Artist for the Community of Jesus at Cape Cod, when they built their new church in 1999-2005. This involved the design and construction of a 170ft. mosaic floor, an apse mosaic, a stained glass window and design for stone and bronze.

She says “community based projects have required an understanding of the needs and abilities of each group to create artwork that encompasses their experiences and abilities in some way...collaborating to design a unique piece that fits with the space and the people who use the space.”
